Yes Abu Dhabi has US Customs "pre-clearance'', meaning this will be your POE. Few airports have this advantage and it's DEFINITELY worth going out of your way for. We did pre-clearance in Dublin, Ireland once and from the time our plane touched the ground to the time we gave our ticket to the boarding crew for our connecting flight to Chicago, it all took about 45 minutes.

POE is your first states of the US that you landed. You can't have POE to other territory that doesn't belong to the US.

There are a few airports outside the US that have so-called pre-clearance zones that count as the POE to the United States. Vancouver, Dublin, Shannon, Abu Dhabi are just to name a few that offer foreign Customs office locations.

Myself: US citizen; Husband: German citizen

His social security card came in 1 week. The green card took 2 months due to a mistake by USCIS.

I think the immigration people in Abu Dhabi are very friendly and professional. They don't give Pakistani's a hard time like some local US airports. It can take hours in Immigration sometimes at local US airports. Remember you will have a 1 year work permit on your visa so you can work without the green card.

My husband (fiance) at the time went through Abu Dhabi and went through immigration there. On the plus side, it was nice to have it done before getting to the US. On the negative side, they never sent his paperwork from Abu Dhabi to the US so our interview was postponed waiting for the documents. We not only had to wait several months to interview for adjustment of status, but at the interview were told they could not approve us bcz they didn't have the medical report bcz Abu Dhabi never sent. We had to go pay for another medical and submit, but were then told we would have to wait up to 6 months for them to review our case and give a decision. When all is said and done, going through Abu Dhabi is taking us 3-8 months longer to get my husband's green card, cost several hundred dollars more, and required me to take an extra 2 days off from work. I don't know if it's unusual for them to lose paperwork, but I personally would rather have them take the paperwork in the US and not worry about UAE mailing our docs across the world again.

Good luck with your journey!
