how to get text/email updates from INS

I noticed folks posting "Got email/text status update..." How do you sign up for the updates? I do not recall providing my email address anywhere on N400. Is it something I can do now (after sending the N400) or is it too late?

When you submitted the N-400, you had the option of completing a G-1145, which would have allowed you to receive an e-mail/text update indicating that your package had been accepted for processing. You can establish an account online at USCIS.GOV by following the menu path Tools --> Check My Case Status. You will see an option to register. After you receive the receipt number you can add your case to your account's portfolio. You will then have the option to request for that case a text update, e-mail update, or both, going forward.

Thank you for suggesting to use the uscis online tool. I realized that I already have an account with the INS . So I updated my portfolio and hopefully will get a text update soon.

You will need to receive the first NOA with your receipt number on it and add that to your online portfolio before you start receiving text/email updates. If you already have that and that is what you updated, you are good to go. The G-1145 is needed to be filed with the N400 in order to get an email or text update that your package has been received.
