If I were to serve as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State, would my soon to be wife be able to go through the green card to citizenship process as she would if we were living in the U.S.? I'm wondering because our intentions are to both be U.S. citizens and if we chose to go down that path it wouldn't be choosing to live in another country but rather being employed by the government to live abroad...

I have this question too.

I was reading earlier about the option for immediate naturalization based on working for the U.S. government or select international organizations abroad.

Hopefully someone knows more about that.

I researched some more about immediate naturalization and found this from DOS...

Expedited Naturalization 319(b)

An applicant for expedited naturalization under INA section 319(b) must be the spouse of a U.S. citizen who is regularly stationed abroad:

  • In the employment of the government of the United States (includes military).
  • In the employment of an American institution of research recognized as such by the Attorney General.
  • In the employment of a public international organization in which the United States participates.
  • As a minister or priest of a religious denomination having a bona fide organization in the United States.
  • As a missionary.

Persons eligible for expeditious naturalization must file their applications in the United States from their overseas location.
