Full time job for successful DCF?

Hi everyone!

I am german citizen married to a US citizen. We got married in the US 5 years ago. We are currently living in Germany but thinking about going to the US.

My wife has a full time job and will get one in the US as well. I am self-employed freelance software developer.

I-130 and other forms ask about employment status.

How important is it to have a full time "nine-to-five" job for the DCF application to be successfully granted? I am wondering if being self-employed could make me look less professional.

Should I consider getting a regular job prior to visa application?

From what I understand, the most important thing about your job is the income that it provides, specifically the amount listed on your tax returns. If the amount is above the minimum required for your visa application, then there is nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your reply. I thought it is important for my wife to have a high enough income to sponsor me (3 times the minimal wage). Does the same requirement applies to me as well?

The petitioner, the US citizen, has to meet the income requirement, not the beneficiary.

It sounds almost like you mean in order to qualify for DCF, which the only thing that qualifies you for DCF is the USC having legal residency in Germany for at least 6 months.

But, regarding meeting poverty lines and such, nothing's expected of you. If your wife's employment is going to cease upon moving to the US then your assets could be your only saving grace. Otherwise a joint sponsor in the US such as your father-in-law will be needed to file a second I-864 form when the time comes for that. That won't be until after the I-130 petition is approved, though.
