Name-change after marriage on K1

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

I married my husband in Feb this year and didn't have my last name changed on the marriage certificate. I've decided recently to change my last name and I want it to be the same on everything (ID, social security card etc..). But it's my understanding that I can't do this unless my name is changed on my green-card (which is still being processed)

Ive read that I can make an appointment with USCIS to have my name changed on the green card, before it's printed. Is this true? What do I need to show them to do this?

Also if I do get my green card changed, if I leave the US for whatever reason, will the differing names on my green card and New Zealand passport cause problems when re-entering?

Since the state you married in allows SSM, then name change through marriage should also apply. Check with your county clerk. You may not need a court order, just the marriage certificate. However, I do not know if the USCIS will allow you to change it now. You can always make an Infopass appointment and ask.

So it doesn't matter if my name has been changed on my marriage certificate?

Many states do not list the new married name on the marriage certificate, and the marriage certificate still acts as a legal name change document.

Great, thank you! I guess I just have to see if USCIS will let me change it.
