Hi guys! I remember we discussed this and it was mentioned that you can get a ssn as soon as you get to the US. However, since you don't have an EAD you must provide another reason for needing it. What reasons were applicable for you? And which papers you must provide to get it? Thank you!

Tue, 12/05/2017 - Biometrics Appointment Letter was uploaded to my USCIS account. Scheduled for 12/22/2017 at 8:00 am at USCIS Tustin

A k-1 is entitled to a SSN. No need for special reason.

You show the K-1 visa, your I-94, and the SS-5 along with the passport and possibly another form of ID. A K-1 is a "legal alien allowed to work" on the form.

I got mine a couple of weeks after arrival, I took Passport, I 94, SS-5 form filled out, I also took a copy of the document on here (in the SSN section) which shows a K1 is entitled to an SSN just in case of any doubts. No problem, had card 4 days later.

Hi, guys! Thanks for your replies! I went to the social security administration office yesterday with only my passport and birth certificate. Then I filled in a form there. The SS-5 probably. And they said I will have my card in 2 weeks (hopefully sooner, but let's see).

But how is it with working for us? We are not allowed to work until we have the EAD right? Or is there another way?

EAD stands for Employment Authorization Document. It is what authorizes you to work, not a SSN.

Once you get a greencard, that also authorizes you to work.

You can apply for an EAD (work permit) on a K-1, as soon as you have an SSN, BUT, this EAD will take 60 days (or longer) to process, will cost $350 (approx) and will run out when your I-94 runs out.

After you get married, you apply for an EAD as well as adjustment of status and this EAD will be processed in the normal amount of time (60-90 days). However, when your first EAD runs out, you cannot legally work until you have the next one in your hands.

With my timeline, I'd end up being able to work for a couple of weeks then have to stop working for about 7 weeks, then start again. Not really worth applying for the EAD until I'm married in my opinion...
