Hello.

I am from Spain so we have 2 last names "given name " "1 last name from father" "second last name from mother"

I'm filling the AOS papers and I would like to keep my second last name ( from muy mom ) as my middle name and my husbands as my new last name.

I hope it's not too confusing.

Is it possible to do?? O you can't just invent names???

Should I wait until the process is done and I have my green card?? Or write the names I want in the future in the forms???

I'm very confuse and I've been reading around the forum but I can't find people from countries where they have 2 last names.

And since in America 2 last names doesn't exist, when the other day I went to the bank they wrote one of them as middle name, it's just too confusing :(

My husband and I use both his last names for legal stuff and just casually use his first last name for everything else. It does get confusing at times. It always makes me smile when I run into someone that understands double last names.

In my state, I had to use both because both is what is appears on the marriage certificate, and since my state does not state your chosen married name on the certificate, it had to match his last name(s). I tried with just the first last name, but could not get my drivers license that way, so I had to use both.

You need to check what the laws are in your state for changing your name through marriage. You could try researching it online and/or asking the court where you purchased your marriage license. I know some have been successful with using their maiden name as their middle name and then taking their husband's last name, so you may be able to.

Hey Iris

I replied to your other thread about your name change, but here you are asking a different question.but I did exactly the same thing you are trying to do.

Anyway I did exactly the same thing you are trying to do.

I used my mom last name and my husband name at the end: Valdivia DeMeritt as my last name. I was not willing to give up on any of my given names, so my first and middle are the same from my single and my last name is both. (So I kept four names). When I want to fill stuff that is not legal I just go with my husband name, for short. But if I am at a bank I make sure they record my name properly. I explain to them that I have two last names and that there is a space in between. :P And they correct their paperwork. No biggie.

On a side note, my husband is going to add my mother's last name to his as well. :P So we will have to give a lot of explanations forever, and probably our kids are going to hate us. :D

Hahahah that is so cute he is going to add it too!! And so funny about the future kids :) they sure will have to give some explanations!

Thanks you 2 for writing.

I was very confused about the name thing and I didn't want to mess up any documentation or having someone confusing them like at the bank. I didn't pay attention because it was normal for me in Spain. And when I got my debit card on the mail and I opened it I kind of felt like "it's not me" haha.
