Hi all,

I arrived in the USA on July 8th on a CR-1 visa.

I have received a social security number but no greencard.
It's been around 5 weeks... need I be concerned?
Can anyone indicate how long I should wait before pursuing the issue?

Secondly, my visa 'issue date' is June 18 2014, and it says my visa 'expires on' Nov 20th 2014.
The stamp on the follow page has a stamped 'July 8 2014'... and underneath, handwritten 'Cr-1 - July 7th 2016'.

Can anyone tell me what the deal is with the Nov 20th 2014 date on the visa? Do I need to be concerned?
Or is it simply the last day I could have used my CR-1 visa to enter.

Finally... I set up a bank account the other day but they've just called me back telling me they have to change it to a temporary account that'll expire after six months. Something to do with not have a greencard.... Can anything in my passport/on the visa, give them the information they need for the time being?

Thanks!!

First of all - not much to stress about here :)

The November date is the 6 month limit after your visa was approved that you had to enter the US. Now that you're in the US, it is not applicable.

The I-551 stamp in your passport IS a green card. I would argue with the bank that you have all rights to work and live here with that stamp. The 2016 date is the expiration of your green card - you'll need to renew it before then.

USCIS recommends contacting them 45 days after entry if you haven't received it - they say "please call the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 or visit your local office by making an InfoPass appointment. Make an appointment by visiting our Infopass page."

45 days from your entry is 22 Aug - you can wait til then to call or make an appointment. Or you can call now, but they'll probably tell you to wait.

The stamp in the OP's passport is a standard CBP entry stamp with applicable information written in. It is that stamp combined with the visa itself that acts as a temporary green card until the actual card is in hand, not the stamp by itself. CBP is no longer placing special I-551 stamps in passports of immigrant visa holders.

If you've been in the USA for more than 2 weeks you can go to the SSA office and apply for an SSN yourself. You can print out the application on the SSA website along with a list of items needed (generally only your passport with your endorsed visa.)

Takes 1-3 months normally to get the hard copy green card from POE or payment, whichever was later.

Yeah, unfortunately some offices only do certain things. As I am learning the more I work with state offices ughhhh.
