Is it mandatory to change your address?

Hi!

My interview was scheduled and it's coming up next month.

I'm moving on Tuesday to NY from FL, so I was thinking, what if we hop on a plane a day before the interview and then leave again and have someone send us the greed card to NY.

Is that "legal"? Or do you need to change your address so your green card is adjudicated in that new state?

Thank you

http://www.uscis.gov/addresschange

"Most non-U.S. citizens must report a change of address within 10 days of moving within the United States or its territories. Exceptions include:

  • Diplomats (visa status A),
  • Official government representatives to an international organization (visa status G), and
  • Certain nonimmigrants who do not possess a visa and who are in the U.S. for fewer than 30 days."

Not notifying USCIS of your change of address is grounds for revocation of your green card.

I meant that is it possible for me to attend this interview in FL and then make the change of address after I receive my Green Card? So I don't have to go through all the process of them re scheduling my appointment for NY.

Sure. Just changing your address won't mean they reschedule and move your interview, but you can wait until after the interview to change it. Usually if you move and want to change the interview, you have to change your address AND request the interview be moved (USCIS isn't big into "automatic" anything), so if you still want to go to the original interview time/place you can do that regardless of whether or not you change your address.

Oh okay! I'm not sure where I read that when you move, the state you live in now has jurisdiction over your case.

So I'll change my address then and assist to this interview.

I found this online:

http://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/change-of-address-after-marriage-based-green-card--1108718.html

So maybe it's better to wait to change your address online if you really want to keep your interview date. Apparently sometimes they will cancel the interview and reschedule it.
