I am not in the IT Industry, But I have a question

1.) Why isn't the USA farming IT jobs overseas like they have done with Manufacturing and Production

2.) I live in Dallas Texas area and we there tend to be a lot of people from India whom come to work in my area on work Visa's for IT jobs, Are these Indians working for cheaper than US Citizens earn, and why do they need import IT people is the industry that short of US workers?

Hi Vol, those are some decent questions.

  1. Because they want to make sure they can keep and eye on (and a hand in) the production process. Outsourcing development tends to be more expensive in the long run and often times not done as well as a programmer in the office. Freelancers work on their own schedule often from home, this means less accountability, and it's more difficult for the companies to monitor their activities while "on the clock" to ensure they really are doing work. There is also the concern for communication gaps, and workers "bleeding" the system (clocking more hours than they actually do).
  2. There is a shortage of qualified IT workers, as the demand for them has tripled. There is a decent amount of "fresh blood" in the field, which is still rapidly growing, but there's much less experienced or seasoned IT professionals. Depending on the scope of the project, they will often hire someone who is qualified and sponsor a Business Visa for them, so they can keep an eye on (and hand in) the process, than a newbie who is a USC. That experience means the project will be done right the first time, and less money put into the project long term, as newbies would have to fix more bugs in their code/troubleshoot issues, and take longer to do it.

I wouldn't believe everything you read.

I know nursing and teaching job forecasts are based on population growth and not on school and hospital plans.

I work combining #2 and #67.
