AOS From Being Legally Married To A US Citizen.

So I came to the US on an F-1 visa.Then in 2010 fell out of status.On November 14 2013 I got married to the most amazing man on earth.Now we are at the process of filling for AOS by ourselves.We have all the right forms and we have been taking our time filling it.My husband has been doing such a great job helping me out but I think some time he gets frustrated.He feels we need a lawyer and I do not.First of all taking a lawyer is very expensive (am sure some of you might disagree and if you do please give me a reason why we should hire one).My only fear is if I make a mistake on my applications will they reject my case?

If any of you is familiar with my case can you please give me some advice on how to go about this whole process.

Will really appreciate you all replies.

If you have no complications with your case, follow the guides, know how to read carefully and follow instructions, then you probably do not need a lawyer. http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide2

im on the same page as you are. and i did all the paperworks alone. without any help from a lawyer. but as long as you submit all the requirements they are asking and fill out the forms correctly( including writing n/a vs none), you'll be fine.

If you can read and understand English relatively well I can't see a need for a lawyer. The instructions are pretty straight forward - you just have to read them completely and follow them exactly.

If you have difficulties with English I can see the benefit to a lawyer, but even then - if you just had a good friend that reads, writes and understands English and was willing to help you, you'd be fine.

I did not use a lawyer and did not get any RFE's. The process was simple and smooth.

July 2005 - met my awesome, hot, amazing love in Lousiana.
July 2006 - Married said love and moved to Canada.
June 2011 - Entered US to visit family, decided to stay.
Feb. 2012 - Sent paperwork to Chicago.

May 2012 - Received green card.

Day 0 - Package sent to Chicago Lockbox - 02/27/2012
Day 2 - UPS Tracking Confirmation - 02/29/2012
Day 4 - NOA Emails Received - 03/02/2012
Day 7 - All Checks Cashed - 03/05/2012
Day 11 - Hard Copy NOA's Received - 03/09/2012
Day 11 - Biometrics Appointment Received - 03/09/2012
--------- - Booked for - 04/03/2012 (day 36)
Day 35 - Early Biometricts Walk-in - 04/02/2012
Day 44 - Received Appointment Letter - 04/11/2012
Day 58 - EAD Approval Online - 04/25/2012
Day 63 - EAD in the mail - 04/30/2012
Day 65 - EAD in hand - 05/02/2012
Day 77 - AOS Interview - 05/14/2012
Day 77 - AOS Approved!
Day 84 - Green Card In Hand - 05/21/2012

Just read up a lot. That's what we did. Read, read, read. Read the guides back to front and inside-out. Read what was on the forums. Took one question at a time. Made sure we had answered it thoroughly before moving onto the next. It took a bit of time, some stress, a few tears shed, but we got there. No lawyer or wasted money. It's doable. Good luck.
