Forgive me...I know this seems pretty obvious but the more I look, the more I become confused. Can anyone confirm for me how much the check should be that accompanies our petition? I believe its $340 but I need to make sure. And then when we fill out the DS-160, we pay another $240, correct? I just want to make sure I have this right since I'm finally getting to mail our petition tomorrow!

Yeah, I've looked at that page a million times. It has a bunch of links to follow. I was just asking for someone who has already done this to confirm for me. Trust me, I've done research. This isn't just me being lazy & asking someone to tell me instead of me trying to figure it out on my own.

Check out the supplemental links I included....

I HAVE already done this, but the fees DO change. You should refer to the latest government sites.

Good luck.

I did look at them. The first link says $340. The second says $240. This is the reason for the post...

Correct, one is the visa petition fee to payable to USCIS during the initial petition submission, the other is the visa application fee payable to DOS during the interview phase. You will be paying both of those fees, and more, during the course of your K-1 visa journey. That is the reason I included the first link, because it gives you a general overview of many of the varied fees that you will incur during this process.

Good luck.

I appreciate your help. But you're not giving me anything I didn't already find on my own. My question was which fee applies to which. I'm not understanding what amount needs to be paid when. I followed the links. I saw what I've already seen a hundred times. Most importantly, I'm trying to find out if my check needs to be made out for $340 to send with the petition or if it should be $240. Then what I will need to pay when we fill out the DS-160 online.

Thank you..that's what I needed to know. I've also viewed the guides a million times but I was double checking on the actual government sites & that was where the confusion set in. Since both $340 & $240 end in 40, I needed to make sure that was right. I apologize for this being something so simple, but this was one time where all my research did was confuse more. I just wanted a person to tell me straight. Sorry

Here is the pertinent section from the first link, the DOS Nonimmigrant Visa for Fiance(e) (K-1) FAQs:

http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/types/family/fiance-k-1.html

Fees

Fees are charged for the following services:

  • Filing an Alien Fiancé(e) Petition, Form I-129F
  • Nonimmigrant visa application processing fee, Form DS-160 (required for each K visa applicant)
  • Medical examination (required for each K visa applicant; costs vary from post to post)
  • Other costs may include translation and photocopying charges, fees for getting the documents required for the visa application (such as passport, police certificates, birth certificates, etc.), and travel expenses to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for an interview. Costs vary from country to country and case to case.
  • Filing Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or to Adjust Status

For current fees for Department of State, see Fees for Visa Services. For current fees for USCIS, see Check Filing Fees on the USCIS website.

It can be confusing, one has to try to become familiar with their bureaucratic jargon.

I have heard of some confused folks printing out the above section from the DOS site; then going to the other links noted, finding the particular form, and penciling in the fee from the corresponding USCIS or DOS site. I figure, whatever will work for you....

One thing for sure, this entire process is not for the faint of heart, nor light of wallet.

Good luck on your visa journey.

I guess that was part of the confusion. Honestly, that's really ridiculous. There should be at least one place that has all that and the fees listed right by it (or an estimate or some indication its a relative amount in the case of the medical, etc) because this hunting and pecking information out is just plain absurd. Maybe this is their way of weeding out the weak <_<

Agreed, sometimes it does seem ridiculous. This current instance is just one good example of your bureaucratic government at work. As is often the case in these visa processes, you have two huge federal government bureaucracies, the Department of State & the Department of Homeland Security, administering their particular section(s) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

If you ever have any trouble sleeping, try reading this : http://www.uscis.gov/laws/immigration-and-nationality-act

Each of these federal departments set their own fee schedules, make their own forms, policies & procedures, etc., related to their particular responsibility for enforcement of the INA.

I was pleased to find the DOS FAQs link, at least it tended to give an overview of the K-1 visa process and some good working links to other federal agencies/posts, such as, USCIS, CBP, SSA, NVC, US Embassies/consulates.

It's their ballgame, their field, their rules, their equipment... What else can I say?

Good luck on your immigration journey.
