TORONTO (AP) — Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, the boxer whose wrongful murder conviction became an international symbol of racial injustice, has died at 76.

John Artis, a longtime friend and caregiver, said Carter died in his sleep Sunday. Carter had been stricken with prostate cancer in Toronto, the New Jersey native's adopted home.

In May 1956, he received an "Undesirable" discharge, having failed to complete his three-year term of enlistment.^[3]He was arrested less than a month later for his escape from the Jamesburg Home for Boys. After his return to New Jersey, Carter was picked up by authorities and sentenced to an additional nine months, five of which he served in Annandale prison. Shortly after being released, Carter committed a series of muggings, including assault and robbery of a middle-aged black woman. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was imprisoned in East Jersey State Prison (formerly Rahway State Prison) in Avenel, New Jersey, a maximum-security facility, where he remained for the next four years,^[3] and spent time in the Rahway and Trenton state prisons.

Don't be too hard on Danno. When it comes to black people, I really think he can't help it. Like it's a nervous tick or something. If it isn't negative about us, he will gladly come in and provide a "counterbalance" or say nothing at all. I just pray for him.

Who said anything about being a choir boy? HIs record is well known. Are we to be forever judged by our mistakes? If that's so, didn't you steal something? Should you be held to the same standard that you hold any minority?
