This question might be redundant but i can't seem to find info on here using my cell...

Can I only apply for a name change (take my soon to be hubby's) once I apply for Naturalization ? (n-400) or can I do anything about it once we're married or go for an AOS?

Thanks :)

You can change your name once you are married. You can take your marriage certificate to the social security office along with your passport and fill out forms with your new surname. You can do a search for this information too! That's what I am doing. Edited by sweetswinks

You can use your husband's name legally from the day you get married. The marriage certificate is legal proof of your name change. You can apply for AOS in your new name simply by putting your new name on the forms. For everything else (including SSN, drivers license, bank account etc) you are just updating the respective agency of your new name. The Social Security Office does not do official name changes.

I hope you weren't referring to social security office doing name changes in regards to my post. I was talking about in general once you are married you can use your husbands surname and when you go to change your social security number details to your new name then you will need your marriage certificate with you (same with bank, drivers licence etc) :)

I kind of was, but I misunderstood you, sorry. I thought you meant the SSA does the official name change (which is a common misconception).

However the SSA will most likely need to see an EAD or GC with the married name as well before they issue a new SS card with the new name.
