When is the interview scheduled and by whom?

I apologise if the question has been asked, but I couldnt find the answer... and when I do see a question sort of relating to it, I see potential contradictions.

When exactly and who schedules your interview date for the K1 visa?

I am looking to travel to the states under the visa waiver program (yes I know that can be complicated in itself) around the time that my interview may be set for.

Is it posible to postpone the interview date until I am back in NZ?

I was thinking of doing one way trips to make sure I could fly back at a moments notice, but I'm thinking it would be easier to show I dont intend to overstay the visa waiver if I have a return ticket.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

There is absolutely no way you will be allowed into the US on the VWP with a one-way ticket.

The embassy in NZ will schedule the interview. It might be possible to postpone - check with other NZ applicants in the Aussie/NZ forum.

Not even with strong enough ties to NZ? Granted that is the reason I am wondering about postponing the interview.

I was hoping to visit my fiance for the 90 days allowed by the VWP as we have a cruise planed out and wanted to start getting situated as well as planning our wedding.

Figured it would be easier to just come with the specific return date and not worry about trying to prove that I was not going to overstay. That of course means I have to make sure it wont affect the interview.

I'll ask around in the Aussie/NZ forum, although, I guess I can see if anyone has already asked before I do.

Thanks!

Haha! Thanks Lainie! You pointed me in the right direction!

I looked for interview scheduling information here. Found this answer:

24. I need to change my visa appointment date. What do I do?

Should you need to change your appointment date, please call the Consulate directly on the phone number listed on your appointment letter. We will endeavor to reschedule an appointment for you.

As a side note they also list:

13. Can I enter the U.S. under the Visa Waiver Program while I'm waiting for my visa interview?

You can travel to the U.S. on the Visa Waiver Program, however, the maximum period of admission under the VWP is 90 days, and this period cannot be extended.. No one can be guaranteed, prior to their arrival at a U.S. port-of-entry, whether or not they would be granted permission to enter the U.S.

Please bear in mind that in order to be admitted, you must still demonstrate that you have a residence outside the U.S. to which you intend to return, if even for a short time.

I take it they would understand if I had to reschedule because I was visiting.

You should have no problem visiting while waiting (I did, plenty others here have) but like I said you will need a return ticket.

Check the procedure for the NZ embassy. I know that for Australia that you could delay the interview date by not responding to packet 3 immediately (at least there used to be - I think they changed the process recently so this avenue no longer exists). I know that people have successfully requested their interview date be moved forward and back in Australia. I would imagine that for NZ you could do the same.
