Obama nominee withdraws due to tax woes

Picked for chief performance officer, she failed to pay household help taxes

NBC News and news services

updated 11 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Nancy Killefer has withdrawn her candidacy to be the first chief performance officer for the federal government, the White House said Tuesday.

"She has withdrawn and we accepted her withdrawal," a White House spokesman told reporters. The spokesman declined to comment on the reasons and said more information would come later.

The 55-year-old executive with consulting giant McKinsey & Co. was expected to detail her reason for pulling out later Tuesday.

When her selection was announced by President Barack Obama on Jan. 7, The Associated Press disclosed that in 2005 the District of Columbia government had filed a more than $900 tax lien on her home for failure to pay unemployment compensation tax on household help.

Since then, administration officials have refused to answer questions about the lien, which she resolved five months after the lien was filed.

Two other Obama nominees have run into tax problems during their confirmation processes.

Timothy Geithner was sworn in as Treasury secretary in January, after winning confirmation despite personal tax lapses that turned more than a third of the Senate against him.

Former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, Obama's nominee to oversea the Health and Human Services Department, is still being considered by the Senate, despite problems with back taxes and potential conflicts of interest.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Answer: Dhimmicruds (like Canada's Grits, NDP and Baloney-Tories) believe that others should pay their taxes--and mean it as a double-entendre.

Anyone who believes that politicians file their own taxes is kidding themselves. Although, that doesn't completely absolve them of the responsibility - the issue is whether these kinds of oversights were deliberate or not.

3 words,

Joe the Plumber

Joe was dragged over the coals by the media when it was found out he had IRS issues. But Tim Geithner (and other dims) doesn't pay his taxes and you hear nothing but excuses...... 'it was an honest mistake' , 'it was his tax preparer'.

YOU are responible if your tax preparer screws up. So time to step up and take responsibility and stop blaming others.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Joe the Plumber was not hauled over any coals". He allowed himself to be used as a political stooge by the McCain campaign - a campaign that he later admitted made him "feel dirty".

Whether taxes are paid or unpaid is a BS issue IMO - unless evidence emerges that there was a deliberate (criminal) attempt to defraud or evade paying.

In that regard if we're looking for examples - Wesley Snipes would be a more fitting one than Joe the Plumber. Snipes actually didn't file income tax returns and was deemed criminally liable.

I understand our tax returns at the moment, because they are very simple. However, they are due to get a lot more complicated with investments etc and I am not sure I would know if a tax specialist made an error on my returns. One does sometimes have to lay a little trust in experts. However, in the case of politicians, I would imagine that the onus is on them to tell whoever prepares their taxes to be meticulous in their scrutiny. Small errors are forgivable, large ones not so much.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

When I was a kid, use to make extra money baby sitting, shoveling snow, cutting grass, raking leaves, etc., can I go back to those neighbors and demand unemployment compensation? Life is getting complicated today, have to issue a purchase order for a kid to cut your grass, with limits of liability specified, and make it clear, that kid is not an employee and this work is being contracted out. And if the work exceeds $600.00 annually to do a 1099 on the kid and report that to the IRS. Kid is then liable to file his own 1040 Schedule C and a SSE to pay his own income and FICA taxes, otherwise you will be liable.

Just went through all my receipts for 2008 for out of state purchases, on items purchased for personal use, have to total those up and pay an additional 5.5% sales tax on my state income tax. They have ways of learning that you purchased out of state by somehow getting hold of your credit card statements, don't ask me how.

Also purchased a used car for parts, way below book value, took what I needed off of it and hauled it to the wrecking yard, state IRS questioned me on the sales tax I paid on that wreck because it was way below book value, had to send in the BOS. Suckers are watching you on every step. No, I wasn't born paranoid, but made that way, USCIS didn't help either.
