My mother’s I-130 has been approved, we’ve filed our I-864, and now finalizing the DS-230. On the DS-230 there is the question “In what occupation do you intend to work in the United States?”
She doesn’t intend to “work” at all. She’s already retired, will turn 70 in December, and my husband (Sherlock on VJ) and I make enough money that she doesn’t need to work. We are going to use her as in-home child care once the baby comes next summer, but I wouldn’t consider that to be formal “employment.” So, do we put “retired,” or “none,” or “child-care?” We’re concerned that if it looks like she’s not going to work, she may be denied at the final interview. Can anyone already done with the process shed any light? This post has been edited by speckles: Nov 4 2009, 10:00 AM -------------------- DCF (2004)

If she is going to do child care for you (basically for room and board), that is "work", so you could put child care.

If she is going to do child care for you (basically for room and board), that is "work", so you could put child care. My wife has retired as a Nursery Teacher and that is what she put. I have heard of many VJ parents who have gone to the USA to retire as LPR without any problem at all. That is why you fill out the I-864 to prove that you can support the immigrant benificiary. -------------------- IR-5 FOR BOTH PARENTS

70 year old medical insrance. Ouch, that is going to cost. Yep it sure is... For my parents it is $1,200.00 per month or $14,400.00 per year or $72,000.00 for the next 5 years (After 5 years they can become Citizens and will then qualify for State Subsidized health care) These amounts do not include any annual increases so you could add about 10% extra for each year.. -------------------- IR-5 FOR BOTH PARENTS

That is not too bad, but there are deuctibles, limits, exclusions etc. So Say $100,000 for 5 years in premium. Do you mind me asking who with? |

I saw this in another thread as well, but no one put a reference. Can someone please give me a reference that says that insurance is required for the interview?
My husband is in the military, we may be able to add her to his military insurance as long as he's still active duty. -------------------- DCF (2004)

My husband is in the military, we may be able to add her to his military insurance as long as he's still active duty. It would only be required if the the interviewing officer felt that she may become a public charge... The interving officer has the right to explore all avenues to ensure that the beneficiary does not become a public charge.. There are very few Health Insurance Companies that will allow a parent to be added to a adult child's policy. I have no knowledge of military health cover..
