VisaJourney.com _ Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas _ Rescheduling biometrics?

Posted by: NateM Nov 5 2009, 05:25 AM

My wife just received notice of her biometrics appointment. To our surprise, the appointment is in a city about 5 hours away (we had anticipated it simply being in the city we live in). Because of this, the rather short notice we were given, and some work obligations, we are considering rescheduling. But I am wondering how much of a delay this may cause...

Does anyone have any experience in this area (rescheduling a biometrics appointment)? There's no phone number to call - the notice says all we can do is send the notice back if we want to reschedule and we'll then receive a new notice with a new appointment time. My concern is having no clue how much later they'll reschedule it. If it's a few weeks or even a month later, that's fine, but I would hate to get the notice back saying the new appointment is 3 or 4 months later (or end up somehow delaying the entire AOS process by that much time, even if the actual biometrics appointment is only delayed by a week or two).

I realize that nobody here can predict this with total accuracy, and am not asking for/expecting that. But if anyone here has had to reschedule a biometrics appointment and can tell me about their experience (particularly how much delay it caused for them), that would be great. And of course, anyone who can provide any input or opinion is welcome to reply as well.

Yes, you can re-schedule as they tell you, but it can set your case back many weeks. The local offices give the national centers "windows" for such things as biometrics, interviews, etc. The local offices keep the rest of the dates and times for themselves. This means if you do as that letter suggests, the next available date could be weeks away. On the other hand, you can make an infopass and walk in and do biometrics before the date on the letter. Most offices will do walk ins for biometrics, BUT since you have to drive 5 hours, I would storngly suggest you put aside your other plans and prioritize this.

When i received my first biometric schedule,I found out that they scheduled it to where I filed my AOS(Idaho) but since we already moved here in New Mexico,I sent back all the org bio appt letters and attached a letter of request of transfer plus the change of address confirmation that the USCIS sent me to USCIS Boise ID where the original biometrics supposed to take place.I received the new bio appt sched after 9 days.we sent it overnight and had a signature confirmation to be sure that it reached it's destination.good luck good.gif

some people have reported success with a 'walk in' - on a date prior to the appointment date. if that's possible for you, i suggest you try it.

Or at least read others' experiences about it, here on VJ.

I called 1-800-375-5283 to ask questions about rescheduling my appointment.
My problem was that transportation company got on a strike and there was no transportation for me to get there.
The lady I spoke with sounded very friendly and helpful saying

even on the day of your appointment you never know if you can make it, so
just write a reason of rescheduling and send it with the original letter.

It does slow your process, so if you want to get your EAD or greencard sooner, I would try to make it to the
appointment somehow.

It is strange that they chose a city that is 5 hours from you where you live. try call the number above
(I could reach a customer representative by selecting #3 on main menu) and ask.
